Charles Krauthammer: ”The fall of Hamas rule in Gaza is within reach, but only if Israel does not cave in to pressure to stop now.”
Guardian: ”There is no talk of Obama approving direct diplomatic negotiations with Hamas early on, but he is being urged by advisers to initiate low-level or clandestine approaches.”
Claudia Rosett, Forbes om UNWRAs rolle i Gaza: ”In the current violence of Gaza, we are seeing the fruition of one of the most bizarre creations of modern diplomacy: a UN-supported welfare enclave for terrorists.”
Marvin Hier, Simon Wiesenthal Center i Wall Street Journal: ”Have there been any all-night Security Council sessions held during the seven months when Hamas fired 3,000 rockets at half a million innocent civilians in southern Israel? … Many people ask why there are so few Israeli casualties in comparison with the Palestinian death toll. It’s because Israel’s first priority is the safety of its citizens, which is why there are shelters and warning systems in Israeli towns. If Hamas can dig tunnels, it can certainly build shelters. Instead, it prefers to use women and children as human shields while its leaders rush into hiding.”
Robert Schrum, demokratisk valgguru: ”What would the U.S. do if missiles were being fired on Florida from Cuba? How would France, an instant opponent of the Gaza operation, respond if Marseilles were struck by rockets from Corsica?”
Amir Taheri, Times: ”Some commentators have claimed that the cause of the current war is Israel’s occupation. But Gaza – until last weekend – was the one bit of Arab territory nominally under Israeli occupation that was free of Israeli settlers and troops. Yet, most of Israel’s troubles, in the form of rocket attacks and suicide operations, came from Gaza. At the other end of the spectrum, the Golan Heights, under Israeli occupation since 1967, have been as quiet as a churchyard despite the presence of large numbers of Israeli settlers and troops. … Hamas, as its charter and political literature make clear, does not want an end to Israeli occupation. It wants the end of Israel. That is because Hamas is part of a pan-Islamist movement with global messianic ambitions. Creating a Palestinian state in Gaza and the West Bank is not its aim. A branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas dreams of world dominion for its version of Islam rather than a mini-state in 5,000 square kilometres of barren land in a geopolitical backyard.”
Ruel Marc Gerecht om Irans rolle: ”Although often little appreciated in the West, revolutionary Iran’s ecumenical quest has remained a constant in its approach to Sunni Muslims.”
Scripps Howard News Service: ”Palestinian civilians continue to be murdered in cold blood – several dozen just last weekend. Many of the victims were gunned down inside hospitals and schools. If you’ve been following the latest Middle East conflict, this will not surprise you. What might: The fact that the assailants were Palestinians — Hamas members targeting those affiliated with the rival Fatah organization.”
Haaretz: ”Hamas must not be allowed to win its conflict with the IDF, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Monday told a delegation of European foreign ministers in a closed conversation.”
Daniel Finkelstein, The Times: ”So when Israel is urged to respect world opinion and put its faith in the international community the point is rather being missed. The very idea of Israel is a rejection of this option. Israel only exists because Jews do not feel safe as the wards of world opinion. Zionism, that word that is so abused, so reviled, is founded on a determination that, at the end of the day, somehow the Jews will defend themselves and their fellow Jews from destruction. If world opinion was enough, there would be no Israel.”
Jerusalem Post: “The IDF insists that the great majority of Gazan casualties have been “gunmen.” The Palestinians say that at least half are “civilians.”
Brookings-forskerne Indyk og Pollack: ”By offering a sustainable ceasefire that ends rocket attacks on Israel, leads to Israeli troop withdrawals from Gaza, prevents smuggling of weapons into Gaza and includes international monitoring of the flow of goods and people, you may be able to convince both sides to de-escalate.”
